The 118 M Chair with Moulded Seat was designed by Sebastian Herkner for the brand Thonet. The brand came to prominence in the 19th century when the founder developed a technique for producing furniture in large quantities. He discovered that by steam bending wood, he was able to speed up the manufacturing process while still creating beautiful designs. German designer Sebastian Herkner contributes to many well known design houses around the world and has won several awards. It was a principle espoused by Michael Thonet to reduce chairs to the minimum amount of elements possible, which is what Herkner has succeeded in doing with the 118 M Chair with Moulded Seat. Although minimalist in design, it has an appealing elegance and boldness. The legs are rounded at the backs and flat at the front, reflecting the shape of the seat. The chair is made from beech and has a moulded plywood seat. The width is 42cm, depth 50cm, the seat height 46cm and the overall height is 80cm. The chair weighs 4.3kg. This striking chair will look good in restaurants and cafes, where a few of them can be grouped together for maximum impact.
